1 Peter is a letter about cultivating hope in God, especially when He becomes difficult to see because of the problems and pain of life on a fallen planet. The old fisherman did not write with rose-colored lenses, nor did he try to smooth away the ragged edge of reality. In verses before us, Peter explains how we can face disease, disaster, death and depression with a sense of hope. Even when times are tough, we can know that God is at work in us.
