The Riches of Poverty

The Riches of Poverty

Passage: Matthew 5:1-3

Preacher: Derrick McCarson

Series: Kingdom Now

Category: Sermon on the Mount

Keywords: matthew, sermon on the mount

Summary:

In the opening of Jesus’ timeless sermon He spells out the characteristics of the happy Christian life. The first twelve verses are known as the Beatitudes, or “blessings.” The Beatitudes are an inversion of everything which the world applauds and promotes as a way to ultimate fulfillment. The first of these beatitudes is to be poor in spirit. In this single verse Jesus explains the riches of poverty, how the beggars can be blessed and how the humble can be absurdly happy. Let’s explore this first key to kingdom life by better understanding why spiritual poverty is essential.
