Woe and Wrath

Woe and Wrath

Passage: Habakkuk 2:5-20

Preacher: Derrick McCarson

Series: Habakkuk: When God Seems Unfair

Category: Prophecy , Habakkuk

Summary:

The prophet wrestled with this dilemma—how could God use a bloodthirsty nation like Babylon as His instrument of judgment on Judah? God answered the prophet simply, “The just shall live by faith” (2:4). In other words, God said to the prophet “Just trust me.” God reassured Habakkuk that Babylon was not getting off scot-free. As a just Judge, God would balance the scales of justice and the Babylonians would be get theirs too. God conveys that message through five “woes” found in verses 2:6, 9, 12, 15, and 19. Taken together, they serve as a formal indictment against Babylon. However, these same woes are still prevalent in our world today and we ought to be warned.
